After iron, aluminium and copper, zinc is the fourth most widely used metal in the world. Aside from being used for galvanization, it is used to make alloys - a substance with greater strength and resistance to corrosion by adding other metals (aluminum, copper, magnesium and iron) into the mixture.
About characteristics, zinc alloy has high strength and hardness, excellent electrical conductivity, high dimensional accuracy and stability. In addition, due to the structural integrity, it is perfect for casting to create the multi-faceted, highly complex shapes products. But, zinc alloy is slightly less strong than some metals such as copper, steel.
The common alloys of zinc:
●
Zamak 3: is a compound of Zn – 4%Al – 0,04%. This is the cheapest and the most widely used among zinc alloys.
●
Zamak 5: is a compound of Zn – 4%Al – 0,04% - 1%Cu. It has a higher copper content than Zamak 3, which results in higher strength but has less ductility. Zamak 5 is more readily plated, finished, and machined than Alloy 3. Both Zamak 3 and Zamak 5 are used in hot-chamber pressure die-casting for automated production of complex shapes, such as domestic appliances, decorative components, door handles, cabinet handles and other wood accessories.
●
Za 8: is a compound of Zn – 8%Al – 1%Cu – 0,02%Mg. It contains significantly more aluminum than the Zamak group of alloys. and is the only ZA alloy that can be hot-chamber die cast. It offers significantly improved strength, hardness, and creep properties but less casting ability. Za 8 improved creep resistance; best for gravity casting; suitable for electroplating and and for use in thin wall components due to its good hardness, strength and pressure tightness.
●
Za 27: is a compound of Zn – 27%Al – 2% Cu–0,015% Mg. It has the highest aluminum content, highest strength, highest melting point and excellent bearing properties. Za 27 is the strongest nonferrous alloy capable of pressure die-casting and extrusion. Therefore, it is usually used in engine parts, pumps, valves, machine bearings.
